"You probably already know, but we have new orders." General Nathan SwiftClaw greeted his command crew in SilverStar's main briefing room as he sat down. "Project Quistar has contacted an apparently friendly expedition from a new race, and we have been assigned the first contact mission."

"Why?" A dragon-winged White Tiger asked.

"Because we are closest, have two DS, and they are on the other side of Mephit space." Nathan smiled at his son. "Mostly that last part. Alliance command does not want this group to fall in with, or be captured by the Mephit."

"How does having two DS figure in?" A Black Lab Canem asked.

"Quistar is fairly certain the contact was made by a DS team, or at the very least, by a race that shares a great deal in common with you. They 'wear' starship bodies, and asked what form they should manufacture to wear to greet us with the least difficulties."

"That was very considerate of them." A White Lioness Felsin commented. "They definitely sound too good to get stuck with those Mephits." She said, with a surprising amount of venom in the last word.

"Not to mention far too dangerous." Nathan added. "There are at least four TLD type ships involved, and at least that many DS-kin. Which also falls into another reason we were given this mission. We don't actually know much beyond what I've said. They appear friendly, want to meet us, and are not locked into a single form or body. The one who did the talking calls itself Chessee."

"Sounds like there really isn't any prep for this mission." Ebon said casually, leaning back in his chair. "Everything is 'wait and see' until we get to the rendezvous point."

"Actually, I was hoping to gather a little info before that," Nathan leveled his gaze at the two DS's solid holoforms. "We have the frequency to chat with them on. I'd like you two to feel this out ... see if we can get some more info before we're in weapons range. And feed it back to us as you go."

The Black Lab and the White Lioness exchanged glances. "Okay, will do. Are they always listening on that frequency, or just at certain times? And is this encrypted or in the clear?"

"As far as I understand, they will always be listening, and it is, unfortunately, clear." He sighed. "You don't need to push, but anything you can learn beyond that one name will be something we didn't know before."

"Okay, we just need to be careful what we say. Don't want to give the Mephits too much." The Lab said. "We'll just keep it friendly and conversational."

The Lioness nodded in agreement.

"Do it, and use your best judgment." Nathan nodded.

"*Do you want to open communications?*" SilverStar asked DarkStar, both working inside SilverStar's computer since her ship had the better long-range communication array.

"*You better do it, you're the more sociable of us.*" DarkStar suggested.

"*Oh well, you owe me for this.*" SilverStar teased.

She opened the communication frequency Nathan had given them. "Hello, Chessee. This SilverStar, I'm with the Galactic Alliance, I was wondering if you'd care to talk?" She said hesitantly after several minutes working up to it. She 'turned' to DarkStar. "*Gods, that was just awful.*"

"*It wasn't that bad, Star. It's not like we usually do the first contact talking after all.*" DarkStar said reassuringly.

"Hi SilverStar." A perky, light voice responded. "I'd love to chat. What's on your mind?"
